I'm not sure of exactly what you are trying to do when you say "build a
long list of fields".  But if you are trying to change the order of the
fields in a file, you can use the menu choice Set Fields to change the
order that the fields are displayed.  You can export them in this order.
 They will be exported in the order that you set.  If you only want some
of the fields, then only select those fields from Set Fields.  You can
add new fields at the bottom of the file and then export them in the
order you want.  You can import them in to another database in the new
order if you want.  If I am missing the point of what you are trying to
do, let me know and we'll try again.
